How to pack a parcel safely
Good packing is the best protection your parcel can have. A parcel travels through collection, sorting and delivery, often on conveyor belts and in stacked loads, so it needs to survive being moved, stacked and occasionally dropped. Here is a simple checklist.
1. Choose the right box
- Use a strong, rigid box in good condition. Old boxes lose strength each time they are used.
- Pick a box that fits the contents with about 5 cm of space on every side for padding.
- For heavy items, use double-walled boxes.
A well-fitted box also keeps your volumetric weight down, which keeps your price down.
2. Wrap and pad
- Wrap each item separately in bubble wrap or paper.
- Fill gaps with padding so nothing moves when you shake the box.
- Keep fragile items away from the sides of the box.
- Put heavier items at the bottom.
3. Seal it properly
- Use strong packing tape, about 5 cm (48 mm) wide.
- Tape all seams and edges, top and bottom, using the "H" method.
- Avoid string, rope or paper wrapping on the outside: they catch on machinery.
4. Label clearly
- Put the label on the largest flat side, not over a seam.
- Include the receiver's full name, address, suburb, postal code and phone number.
- Remove or cover old labels and barcodes so the parcel cannot be misrouted.
- Mark fragile parcels clearly, but pack them as if nobody will read the sticker.
5. Pallets and larger loads
For heavier consignments on pallets:
- Stack evenly with heavy boxes at the bottom and nothing hanging over the edges.
- Wrap the whole load tightly with stretch wrap and strap it if needed.
- Label every pallet and every box.
Our road freight and cargo handling pages explain how we move larger loads.
Things to declare before you book
Some items need special packing or cannot be sent at all, including batteries, liquids and anything flammable. Read what you can't send by courier and ask us if you are unsure.
Do you need insurance?
Even well-packed parcels can be lost or damaged. Our standard liability is limited, so declare the value of anything valuable and ask us about cover. The details are in our terms and conditions.
Need to send something? Tell us what it is and where it's going, and we'll send a clear price.
