What you can't send by courier
Most everyday items can be sent by courier, but some cannot be carried at all and others need to be declared and packed to strict rules. Checking before you book avoids delays, returned parcels and safety risks.
This is a general guide: rules differ by service, carrier and destination. Our terms and conditions set out how dangerous goods are handled. If you are unsure, ask us before you book.
Items generally not accepted
- Explosives, fireworks and ammunition
- Flammable liquids and solids, such as fuel, paint thinners and lighter fluid
- Compressed gases, such as gas cylinders and some aerosols
- Firearms and weapons
- Cash, negotiable instruments and precious stones or metals
- Illegal goods, drugs and counterfeit products
- Live animals and perishable goods, unless specially arranged
Items that need special arrangements
Some items can be sent only if they are declared, packed and labelled correctly:
- Lithium batteries, including those inside phones, laptops and power banks. They are a known fire risk, especially on aircraft.
- Liquids, which must be sealed and packed to prevent leaks.
- Medicines, which may need documents, especially across borders.
- Fragile or high-value items, which need careful packing and suitable cover.
Air services are the strictest, because dangerous goods on aircraft are tightly controlled.
Sending across borders and overseas
International and cross-border parcels must also meet the destination country's import rules. Items that are fine to send within South Africa may be restricted elsewhere. Imported goods are generally subject to duties and taxes, usually paid by the receiver. SARS publishes the rules on prohibited and restricted goods for South Africa.
Why it matters
- Safety: undeclared dangerous goods can cause fires and injuries.
- Delays: non-compliant parcels can be held, returned or destroyed.
- Cover: undeclared or incorrectly packed items may not be covered if something goes wrong.
